Golfing roots run deep—established 1922.
Origins and Early Development (1922–1978)
Established in 1922, the Shoshone Golf Club began as a modest 3-hole course with sand greens in the Big Creek drainage area. This initiative was primarily driven by local professionals, including doctors and mining executives, seeking recreational opportunities. The Sunshine Mine played a pivotal role in its inception, providing both land and materials, such as timber for the clubhouse.
The course’s initial location posed challenges, notably frequent flooding from Big Creek. Over time, as the mining industry expanded, the area became less suitable for recreational use. By the late 1970s, environmental concerns and the need for a new tailings pond led to the decision to relocate the course. (source: www.shoshonenewspress.com)
Relocation to Gold Run Mountain (1979–Present)
In 1979, the Shoshone Golf Club was moved to its current location on Gold Run Mountain. The new 9-hole course was designed by architect Keith Hellstrom and officially opened with a ceremonial round by legendary golfer Sam Snead.
The relocation provided a more stable environment, free from the flooding issues of the previous site. The course features narrow fairways and challenging greens, offering a rewarding experience for golfers of all skill levels.
Centennial Celebration and Community Engagement
In July 2022, the Shoshone Golf Club celebrated its 100th anniversary. The centennial event included a golf scramble, social hour, and a catered dinner, bringing together members and the local community to honor the club’s rich history.
